East London lecturer posted to Algeria crisis

01.22.13 AlgeriaSarah Davidson.jpg

An east London lecturer put her studies into practice when she supported the Red Cross during the recent Algerian hostage crisis.

Clinical psychologist Sarah Davidson runs an online Masters course at the University of East London (UEL) but was posted to Africa earlier this month, joining forces with the Red Cross Psychosocial Support Team and the Foreign and Commonwealth Office's Rapid Deployment Team.

As a volunteer for the Red Cross team, UEL's International Humanitarian Psychosocial Consultation programme leader was on standby to provide support and practical advice during the traumatic experience.

"I never have a bag packed when I'm on standby, as I don't know what kind of climate I may be sent to, but I managed to get to the airport within a couple of hours," said Sarah.

"The team was briefed that there was a hostage situation in Algeria involving British nationals, but it was the next morning before we could get a flight out there."

On the team's arrival in Algeria, Sarah said contact was made with the incident team, and she was tasked with talking with those involved and helping them to cope with the stressful situation.

"We witnessed some breathtaking dedication from the teams on the ground and I have great respect for their professionalism and dignity," she said.

Pervasive Software to be acquired by Actian for $161.9 million

(Reuters) - Pervasive Software Inc said it had agreed to be acquired by Actian Corp, after the privately held big data management company raised its earlier offer by about 8 percent to $161.9 million.

Actian will offer $9.20 in cash to Pervasive shareholders for each Pervasive share. The offer price represents a premium of 2 percent to Pervasive's closing price of $9.05 on Monday on the Nasdaq.

Actian, headquartered in California, had raised its bid for Texas-based Pervasive twice. It initially offered $8.50 per share last August, and increased the price to $9.00 in November.

Pervasive's share price has risen about 12 percent since it attracted Actian's interest last August. Pervasive's revenue rose 6 percent in the six months ended December 2012, compared with the same period a year earlier.

Actian, backed by private equity firm Garnett & Helfrich Capital, builds apps for big data management through its cloud development platform. It also owns databases that help analyze big data faster for customers such as Oxford University, Cathay Pacific Airways and Lufthansa.

"We believe the two companies' complementary product portfolios, track record of technological innovation and well-established customer bases provide a platform for compelling synergies," Pervasive Chief Executive John Farr said.

Shea & Company, LLC advised Pervasive on the deal, while Evercore Partners advised Actian on the deal. TC Lending LLC, a unit of TPG Specialty Lending Inc, committed to provide debt financing for the transaction, Actian and Pervasive said in separate statements.

Pervasive said it expected to close the deal in the second calendar quarter of 2013.

Lenovo announces multi-user Horizon Table PC for $1,699 and up (video)

Lenovo announces multiuser IdeaCentre Horizon 27 Table PC video

In addition to announcing some traditional all-in-ones today, Lenovo is introducing the IdeaCentre Horizon 27 Table PC. It too is a full-fledged, battery-powered desktop, but it can collapse into table-top mode, becoming a 27-inch, 1080p slate optimized for multi-user touch input.

The design is quite similar to the Sony VAIO Tap 20 we saw at IFA, with a built-in stand that supports the screen in an upright position. The 17-pound design feels sturdy, but it's also very thin, at 27mm (1.1 inches) thick. The blood and guts are what you'd expect of a high-end AIO: processors range from Core i3 to i7, graphics max out at NVIDIA GeForce GT 620M and storage tops off at 1TB.

Users can switch between the Aura moon-dial UI, which is a hub or games, photos and other media, and the standard Windows 8 interface. As you can imagine, the Horizon is ideal for multi-player games, and EA Games has pre-loaded several titles, including Monopoly, that are primed especially for this machine. Incidentally, Lenovo also bundles the Table PC with joysticks and an e-dice. There will also be an optional stand, which supports use in flat table mode as well as desktop mode -- with an included keyboard, to boot. Lenovo says pricing will start at "approximately $1,699," with a release date slated for early summer. Check out our hands-on video past the break for a closer look.

British broadcaster Attenborough has narrated some of the most spectacular footage ever captured of the elaborate mating dances of birds of paradise. Two-time Olympian killed after bike is struck by minibus in South Africa

Jacques Boissinot / AP file

Burry Stander, seen here in 2010, was hailed as a "South African icon and sporting great" by Oscar Pistorius.

?

By NBC News wire services

JOHANNESBURG - One of the world's top mountain bikers died Thursday after being hit by?a minibus taxi?while training on a coastal road.

Burry Stander, 25, narrowly missed out on a medal at the London Olympics, coming in fifth in the men's cross country event. He also finished 15th at the Beijing Games.

The South African was a former under-19 and under-23 world champion.

Police said Stander was killed on Thursday while cycling alone. He died at the scene of the accident in Shelly Beach, about 75 miles southwest of Durban.

'Ultra-competitive'
"The taxi driver allegedly stopped after the accident until the arrival of the police. No arrest has been made at this stage," police said in a statement.

"I'm totally shattered," said Gideon Sam, president of the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee. He called Stander "talented, ultra-competitive but at the same time extremely humble and a true gentleman."

Full international coverage from NBC News

The two-time Olympian's death prompted a flood of tributes on social media from South African athletes, politicians and celebrities. Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee Olympic runner and multiple Paralympic medalist, said on Twitter he was "utterly devastated."

"A South African icon and sporting great. RIP my friend," Pistorius wrote.

Cycling South Africa said Stander was the country's most successful mountain biker and "a true icon and sporting role model."

Stander was the second leading cyclist to be killed in a road accident in South Africa in recent years. Carla Swart died in January 2011 when she was hit by a truck while training.

Reuters and The Associated Press contributed to this report.

'56 Up' is a telling human saga

In 1964, Michael Apted, a 22-year-old law student recently graduated from Cambridge, was recruited by Granada TV to seek out 14 seven-year-old children for a documentary about the class system in British society and how it predetermined lives. The show?s guiding principle was the Jesuit maxim ?Give me the child until he is seven and I will give you the man.?

That documentary, ?Seven Up? ? in which children were selected from the working and upper classes, with fewer girls than boys and the middle class essentially unrepresented ? was intended as a one-shot experiment. But Apted ended up carrying the project forward at seven-year intervals, revisiting the original group each time. (One boy, ironically enough a documentary filmmaker, dropped out early on, and a few others fell out and then back in again.) What began as a kind of political tract soon enough morphed into something far more resonant: a long-form epic about the changes that life brings.

?56 Up? is the latest installment in this ongoing odyssey, which by now has taken on a life of its own. Ever since ?28 Up,? at least, Apted has had to crowd his subsequent editions with the participants? lengthening back stories in order to bring both initiates and uninitiates in the audience up to speed. At 56 and counting, that?s a lot of back story, and sometimes the effect is scrunched, with more screen time seemingly devoted to the participants? pasts than to their presents.

But this is unavoidable in a project of such scope, and it also has its advantages. The effect of seeing these 7-year-olds expanding over time into 56-year-olds is almost symphonic at times, as Apted shuttles us between footage shot over those many years.

From a class-conscious standpoint, with few exceptions, that Jesuit maxim has proved true ? the working-class kids and the upper-class kids have almost predestined life trajectories. But Apted has moved beyond such simplifications. The ?Up? series has its greatest value, I think, as a complex human document, not a reductively political one.

Most touching is the com-parison between the scruffy black-and-white interviews from 1964 and those of the present day. In some cases, the differences are stark. The almost supernally cheerful boy Neil has, over time, been hobbled by mental illness and indigence; and yet he hangs on, making useful work for himself in local council politics and church activities.

Like more than a few of the participants, he?s wary of Apted?s cinematic intrusions. Apted acts as the off-camera interviewer, and his dry, almost blas?, but always indulgent questioning sometimes provokes an aggravated response.

Perhaps the truest criticism of the series is offered up by Nick, who was educated in a tiny village in the Yorkshire Dales before attending Oxford and is now an engineering professor in Madison, Wis. Complaining of the tiny slivers of a life that make it into the movie every seven years, he wonders: ?Is that all there is to us?? He rejects the idea that the film truly conveys the lives of its subjects, but, in a larger sense, he says, the participants represent Everyman.

I think he?s both right and wrong. Certainly a primary appeal of the ?Up? series is the way it allows us to see ourselves, whatever our station, in these people. For those of us who have been with the series from early on, a kind of parallel existence has grown up between us and them.

But what gives the series its force is not just its universality but also its particularity. These grown-ups may be Everyman, but they are also singular. If the ?Up? movies are reality TV, they are its most transcendent expression. Apted doesn?t try to force his interviewees into unnatural situations. He allows their lives to play out however they do. ?56 Up? may lack the life-changing dynamic that characterized some of the earlier editions, but that?s appropriate to the life cycle. The quotidian existence is presented without apology. Grade: A- (Unrated.)

12 Food Trends To Look Out For In 2013 - Business Insider

2013 is the year of the snake, according to the Chinese lunar calendar. But in food circles, it just might be the year of the roast chicken or Asian noodles.

Molecular gastronomy, fancy cupcakes, Korean tacos? So, so 2012.

The new year is always the time when prognosticators of all stripes decide what's in, what's out and, most intriguing of all, what's next. Will we eat more Asian-influenced sandwiches and less Asian fusion? More Latin American flair, with a focus on Peru and Brazil? What influence will the economy, the growing number of farmers markets and our time-crunched lives have on what we eat?

"We are always looking for new versions of things that we already know," says Harry Balzer, who has been watching what America eats for more than 30 years as a senior analyst with NPD market researchers. "We're explorers, but we're not Christopher Columbus.

"Where are the things that could have the greatest impact? They're in the things that we eat the most often," he says: sandwiches, vegetables and fruit.

Here's our forecast based on the buzz among prognosticators we talked with:

Heirloom chicken:

Like heirloom turkeys and heritage pigs before it, now may be chicken's turn to get attention. "We'll begin calling chicken by their varieties and, maybe, begin noticing the difference in flavors," says Clark Wolf, a restaurant consultant and trend spotter. In fact, Bret Thorn, senior food editor at Nation's Restaurant News, said it's here, pointing to an emerging class of high-quality fast-casual restaurants like Bantam & Biddy in Atlanta that celebrate heritage chicken.

Good, and good for you:

"Vegetables will continue to move to the center of the plate, catering to vegetarians, vegans, flexitarians, foodies and nutrition-conscious carnivores alike," says David Sprinkle, research director of consumer market researcher Packaged Facts.

Kale sits atop the greens heap now (you ate lots of crispy chips last year, didn't you?) and may be joined by Brussels sprouts and more. "It's not always easy to convince a consumer, especially a mainstream consumer, that a vegetable dish is going to have flavor and interest and innovation," says Mary Chapman of Technomic, a food service research and consulting firm. "But then you look at a menu like the Cheesecake Factory that has kale on one of their salads (and patrons think), 'Maybe I would be willing to try it there, and then I know what to do with it.'"

Baobab, a coconut-size fruit loaded with vitamin C, fiber and calcium, could be the next superfruit, predicts Josh Schonwald, author of "The Taste of Tomorrow."

Regional cooking:

The continuing emphasis on local and seasonal foods will, Wolf predicts, lead toward a local, seasonal and more distinctive regional style of cooking.

Techno-shoppers:

Texting while shopping? Why not. According to The Food Marketing Institute, 52 percent of consumers use technology in their grocery shopping, 32 percent are using online coupons, while a nearly equal amount (31 percent) use mobile technology when grocery shopping to make shopping lists, find recipes or research products.

Greek yogurt, part II:

Look for Greek yogurt dressings, dips, sauces, smoothies, soda and even cheesecakes with Mediterranean ingredient garnishes. "Keep an eye out for me-too promotion of other regional/national yogurt styles (such as New Zealand yogurt)," Sprinkle says.

Noodling:

Look for udon, soba, cellophane and rice noodles to show up in hearty layered bowls, fragrant soups and even mixed-texture salads, not only in a burgeoning number of big-city noodle shops but in seafood and varied-menu restaurants as well, Technomic researchers say.

Tummy time:

"This is going to continue being a trend for how we define health, moving from avoidance of harmful substances to adding beneficials to, now, digestive health. ... The question is, will it be gluten or will it be probiotics?" says Balzer.

Molecular gastronomy:

"In many ways the No. 1 trend is the rather public demise of molecular poo-poo," Wolf says. "Enough. Fine. Time's up."

High-end Bordeaux:

"I hate to say it, but Bordeaux is out right now. Pricing has gotten extremely high," says Evan Goldstein, a master sommelier, wine writer and president of Full Circle Wine Solutions in San Carlos, Calif.

Fast-food favorites:

Mini-burgers, Korean tacos, fancy cupcakes: Foodies may call them "passe, but there are plenty of people who are still loving them," Chapman says.

Packing the pantry:

When the economic downturn hit, did you really need five boxes of pasta, and 10 cans of tuna? "The biggest collector of food in this country is the American home," says Balzer, who watched as we readjusted pantry inventory levels in 2012. "People still ate, but their volumes were not being seen in supermarket sales because people were using (items on hand). Perhaps we will restock our inventories as the economy picks up."

Liquid sugar:

"Consumption (of sugary sodas and fruit juice) will continue a downward trend, though fresh squeezed/pressed juices with help make a fresh case for fruit juice," Sprinkle says. ___

The Art Of Self Improvement: Some Tips | Samuel Levitz ? A Home ...

Knowing exactly what to do to improve your life can be tricky. There is no foolproof method: every individual has to find a personalized solution. Therefore, you need to be constantly searching for new methods to assist you, such as the ones in the below article. Read this article so that you can find excellent methods that can be applied in your own self improvement strategy.

If you like to talk a lot, you might have heard that you need to zip those lips and listen more. This is definitely true concerning personal development. Make sure you listen to yourself. If you don?t, you won?t understand your needs and that can make better yourself nearly impossible.

Don?t waste too much money on comfort items. Shopping your stress away, or ?retail therapy? as some people say, is really more of a stress inducer, because it distracts you from the stress for a while but it all comes back with big bills and interest charges when the bills come in.

TIP! Accept your limitations before engaging in personal development. When you realize how insignificant you really are, you will begin to understand you have more to learn.

Failure can be a harmful and large blow to your ego and self-esteem when working on personal development. The good news is that failure can be an enlightening learning experience. Failure helps you learn about weaknesses and strengths. Looking at it this way, failure is a source of pride, because you?ve unlocked another piece of the puzzle when it comes to your development.

Researchers are exploring how we use a dimension of our personalities termed sexual capital. This is basically another term for charisma. It involves using charm to get people to like you. Good social skills are not something everyone is born with, but developing them help you go the distance in life.

Become aware of the distance you need to travel to achieve your personal development goals. You have to realize this difference before you can actually get to your destination. If you cannot see this discrepancy, it is unlikely that you will reach your highest potential.

TIP! Respect your body?s boundaries in pursuit of any goal you might have. You should give it your very best effort and you need to know when you are giving too much.

By writing down your goals, you can aid your self improvement. Write down everything you aspire to be or to change about yourself. Then, think of things you can do, or might have already done, to build your confidence. Try to find situations where you can put these methods to work. If you do this kind of preparation and tackle the process with dedication, you will likely achieve your personal development goals.

Take the time to read what has helped others to be who they want to be. Not only will you find information on being successful, but you will also learn about mistakes that others have already made and be able to avoid them. By learning about the different strategies that other people have used, you can stay inspired and motivated to continue forward.

Always be up for a challenge. Finding a new challenge will open up new possibilities. You may learn new things and learn new skills. You may even be lucky enough to do something that has never been done by anyone. Take on a challenge that is unique and personally meaningful, instead of tackling something that someone else has already accomplished.

TIP! You should feel comfortable in your own skin and being the person that you are. Everyone has unique individual skills which is what makes our planet diverse.

Try to avoid unneeded stress whenever possible. If you overreact to a situation, you simply increase your stress, which is unnecessary and undesirable. Sometimes, circumstances will be not be in your complete control. Taking time to come up with reasonable resolutions will afford you peace of mind.

Remember that you cannot please everybody, and that you should be your own top priority. You should not be selfish and only do what you want with no regards to others, though you do need to take full responsibility for your happiness. Internet Network Marketing Success? Your Having a Giraffe ...

Have you really considered what factors will actually contribute to Internet Network Marketing success?

Internet Network Marketing Success
Value = Success

The truth is if you didn't know it already is that your success lies wholly in your own hands. Your success is totally dependent upon the decisions you make and the action you take. Here's a list of factors that I believe have the greatest impact upon the level of success you achieve with your Internet Network Marketing business.?

* How hard you're prepared to work and the consistency you apply to productive action
* The Network Marketing company you work with and the products they market
* Your willingness to develop long-term and meaningful partnerships with people
* The marketing strategies you adopt and the tools you use to support them
* Your choice of a good mentor

Sounds pretty simple now doesn't it. Actually it can be if you make all the right decisions when starting out. Network Marketing is a very exciting home business concept and offers hope to many in challenging economic times however you have to accept you will not become rich overnight.

5 Steps to Internet Network Marketing Success

An analogy is great sports person; perhaps an Olympic gold medallist. We all witness their greatest moment of success; the pinnacle of all their dreams, hopes and desires culminating in one glorious day of achievement. What you don't see is the blood, sweat and tears of 4 or more years of dedicated daily training; their moments of deep pain, failure and despair. Still they push through and achieve; not alone but with the encouragement of their support network. It's no different in business.

?

Step 1: Internet Network Marketing Success: Understand Lead Generation

?

The lifeblood of any Network marketing business is lead generation and the a constant flow of these leads. It's critical that the leads generated are not just stone cold leads, they need to be qualified leads from people who are serious about either purchasing the products or the opportunity that your offering.

Perhaps you're an experienced marketer who has developed a robust lead generation system through tried and tested means and it works for you. That's great, but sadly a lot of people new to Network Marketing do not. It is possible though to alleviate years of struggle and guarantee Internet Network Marketing success.?

That said it becomes vital that your choice of company to supply you with leads offers quality and value with respect to training in order to equip you with relevant knowledge, the right systems and tools for Internet marketing as well as providing a flow of targeted leads for your business.

?

Step 2: Internet Network Marketing Success: Work with Well Established & Strong MLM company?

?Take a while and have a look at the management behind lots of the successful network marketing and MLM enterprises today.

For example consider Mary Kay, The Pampered Chef and Kleeneze and you'll see those businesses have a strong and solid managerial team who are committed to their future business success whilst realising to accomplish their goals they stay aligned to the success of the each distributor within their respective marketing network.

?Step 3: Internet Network Marketing Success: Be the Problem Solver

This might have you scratching your head, but traditional Network Marketing has always been based upon providing solutions to peoples' specific problems. These problems may include having enough money to cover their bills, pay off debt, support their children's activities or saving for a holiday or a new car. Whatever their 'problem' it's generally centred upon improving their financial situation.

As a responsible Network Marketer and to ensure Internet Network Marketing success our role has to be focused upon delivering to your prospects needs. This is achieved by building a relationship with each and every prospect to better understand their wants and needs. By taking a genuine interest in your prospects makes you 'attractive' to them.

This is the basis of Attraction Marketing; you're delivering your message to your target audience; the people who are most likely to be receptive to you're offering, listening to them and then delivering to their needs. This strategy works in both the online and offline worlds of Network Marketing.

?

Step 4: Internet Network Marketing Success: Tool up for the Job?

Having the right systems and tools to the job correctly is essential, especially when you're pushed for time.

Although it's good business policy to let everyone know that your in business for yourself and offering them information about what your doing, the days of continually truding around your 'warm market' are long gone. This a guaranteed way to quickly lose the respect of your friends, family and work colleagues.

Internet Network Marketing Success
Always aim for Quality

There are many types of online and offline tools available to you however you have to ensure that you consider carefully if each tool is a good fit for your business. With respect to leads you may get a few free ones to get you started from your upline however after that people are generally left to their own devices. This often results in a period of trial and error until you find your feet.

During this time you're at your most vulnerable and easy prey for lead gneration companies who will offer you the 'easy' option of buying cheap leads. As these leads are not generally targeted to your business needs then they are practically worthless. You can spend many wasted hours effectively cold calling people who have no interest in your offer......

.......and in many cases your upline will let you go through this. It's at this point when people quit Network Marketing believing it doesn't work.

Whatever ways you use to generate leads for your business always, always think in terms of targeting your campaigns and qualifying your leads. You may not get the same quantity of leads but you'll absolutely get the quality.

?

Step 5: Internet Network Marketing Success: Find a Quality Educational & Lead Generation Platform

?

Are there really any good Internet Network Marketing Success Systems?

The bottom line to creating unstoppable Internet network marketing success? Sales and marketing systems.

You absolutely must learn the art and science of generating new product and customer leads, as well as new potential business builder prospects, on a day-to-day basis. Just think about it this for a moment. How many successful businesses do you know that do not have a good sales and marketing policy that generates leads to sell products and grow it enterprise ?

In both your traditional and online Network marketing your success will rely completely on how effective you can be as a marketing specialist. That is the bottom line.?

There are literally hundreds, if not thousands of companies and people offering online courses, e-books and software you can download and be assured will only too happy to take your money and tell you they can resolve your problems. If you sign up with these you will be constantly hit by 'upsell' emails. Be careful who you share your details with.
