Islamist Morsi declared Egypt's president

Muslim Brotherhood member Mohamed Morsi was declared on Sunday as the first president of Egypt since a popular uprising ousted Hosni Mubarak, capping a tumultuous and divisive election.

Morsi, who ran against Mubarak-era premier Ahmed Shafiq, won 51.73 percent of the vote after a race that polarised the nation.

"The winner of the election for Egyptian president on June 16-17 is Mohamed Morsi Eissa al-Ayat," said the head of the electoral commission, Faruq Sultan.

Morsi's victory marks the first time Islamists have taken the presidency of the Arab World?s most populous nation, but recent moves by the ruling military to consolidate its power have rendered the post toothless.

Morsi will give a televised address at 1800 GMT, spokesman Yasser Ali told AFP.

Tens of thousands of Morsi supporters celebrated in Cairo's Tahrir Square, waving flags and posters of the Islamist leader, who was jailed during the uprising that overthrew Mubarak early last year.

"God is greatest" and "down with military rule" they chanted as some set off firecrackers minutes after the electoral commission formally declared the result.

Across Cairo, cars sounded their horns and chants of "Morsi, Morsi" were heard.

Morsi won with 13,230,131 votes against Shafiq's 12,347,380, Sultan said. The election, in which more than 50 million voters were eligible to cast their ballot, saw a 51.8 percent turnout.

Morsi resigned from his posts in the Muslim Brotherhood and its Freedom and Justice Party, which he headed, after he was declared the winner, the Brotherhood announced.

Military ruler Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi, who took power when Hosni Mubarak was forced to resign in February last year, congratulated Morsi on his win, state television announced.

And the interim head of the Coptic church, many of whose faithful have feared the rise of Islamists, also congratulated Morsi.

Shafiq supporters who had gathered to hear the result with his campaign team in the suburbs of Cairo were devastated by the result.

Some women screamed and others cried as several men held their heads between their hands in despair.

"It's a very sad day for Egypt. I don't think Morsi is the winner. I'm very sad that Egypt will be represented by this man and this group," Shafiq supporter Maged told AFP.

The capital was tense before the announcement, with the city's notoriously busy streets deserted and shops and schools closed.

Extra troops and police were deployed as military helicopters flew overhead.

The road to parliament was closed to traffic, and security was tightened around vital establishments as Egyptians waited nervously for the result.

The election has polarised the nation, dividing those who feared a return to the old regime under Shafiq from others who wanted to keep religion out of politics and who fear the Brotherhood would stifle personal freedoms.

Shafiq ran on a strong law-and-order platform, pledging to restore security and stability. He is himself a retired general, but as a Mubarak-era minister he is reviled by the activists who spearheaded the 2011 revolt.

President-elect Morsi was the Islamists' fallback representative after their deputy leader Khairat El-Shater was disqualified.

In campaigning he sought to allay the fears of secular groups and the sizeable Coptic Christian minority by promising a diverse and inclusive political system.

On Saturday, two massive Cairo protests duelled for supremacy.

Thousands of Brotherhood supporters thronged Tahrir Square, with hundreds spending the night there. "Morsi, Morsi, God is greatest," they chanted.

Across the city in the Nasr City neighbourhood, thousands of Shafiq supporters held up pictures of him and of Tantawi, chanting: "The people and the army are one."

"Down with the rule of the Supreme Guide," they shouted, referring to the head of the Muslim Brotherhood.

Both Morsi and Shafiq had claimed victory in the election for a successor to Mubarak, and tensions heightened after the electoral commission delayed announcing the official outcome.

The delay in announcing the result of the June 16-17 run-off, initially scheduled for Thursday, had raised raised suspicions that the outcome of the election was being negotiated rather than counted.

On Friday, the SCAF warned it would deal "with utmost firmness and strength" with any attempts to harm public interests.

The Brotherhood warned against tampering with the election results, but also said it had no intention of instigating violence.

It has rejected a constitutional declaration by the military that strips away any gains made by the Islamist group since the popular uprising which forced Mubarak to stand down in February last year.

The document dissolves the Islamist-led parliament and gives the army a broad say in government policy and control over the new constitution. It was adopted just days after a justice ministry decree granted the army powers of arrest.

Without Michael, Jackson brothers prepare to tour

BURBANK, Calif. (AP) ? Guided by a thumping bass line from their backing band, the Jackson brothers strut forward to a row of four microphones, thrusting their pelvises along the way, before launching into "Can't Let Her Get Away," a song their superstar sibling released on his "Dangerous" album. If they had afros and matching powder blue suits, it might feel like 1977 again.

It doesn't. They're casually sporting sunglasses, workout gear and a few more pounds than when they, along with the future King of Pop, were simply known as the Jackson 5. (Also, "Can't Let Her Get Away" was released in 1991 after the group fizzled out.)

Nearly three years since Michael died while preparing for his comeback tour, four of his brothers ? Marlon, Jermaine, Tito and Jackie ? are set for their own return to the stage as The Jacksons. It hasn't been easy.

"The brothers don't know this, but I've broken down several times and cried during rehearsals," said Jermaine during a recent rehearsal break on a soundstage in Burbank, Calif. "I'm so used to Michael being on the right and then Marlon, Jackie, on and on. It's just something we never get used to."

The brothers are launching their "Unity" tour on Wednesday, five days ahead of the third anniversary of Michael's death from an overdose of the anesthetic propofol on June 25, 2009.

"For me, this cycle that comes around every year ? this day, that day ? that doesn't affect me because it affects me every day," said Marlon. "When that day comes around, it's the same. You learn to live with it. I still wake up sometimes and go, 'Jeez. I can't believe my brother's not here.'"

Following Michael's death, the four brothers appeared in the A&E reality series "The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty," which chronicled their loss and attempt to stage a comeback before their brother died.

Jermaine said the brothers have wanted to reunite on their own for years, but after Michael's passing, they needed time to heal ? and the tour is another step in that process. They've rearranged their classics to suit their voices, and Jermaine said the group plans to pay tribute to Michael during their shows with a slideshow and medley that will conclude with the tune "Gone Too Soon."

"There's certain songs that make you feel the sorrow," said Tito. "Then again, there are other songs that bring so much joy and happiness, such as 'ABC' and 'I Want You Back' and the up-tempo stuff like 'This Place Hotel.' I just imagine how he used to walk and spin and do all these things. You can feel his presence here."

The Jacksons' tour kicks off at Rama Casino in Ontario, Canada, and is scheduled to end July 29 at the Snoqualmie Casino Amphitheater in Snoqualmie, Wash. Other stops include Detroit's Fox Theatre, Los Angeles' Greek Theatre and Harlem's sold-out Apollo Theatre, where the Jackson 5 won an amateur night in 1969 before rocketing to fame.

Michael later forged unprecedented success as a solo artist. His superstardom was unrivaled, and his brothers couldn't capture similar acclaim or sales with their solo projects or last studio album, 1989's mostly Michael-less "2300 Jackson Street," but their legacy as a group has remained unchanged. The Jackson 5 were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997.

While various combinations of the brothers have reunited to perform over the years, including at last year's "Michael Forever" tribute concert in Wales, "Unity" will mark the first time the brothers have toured together since their final "Victory" outing in 1984. (Marlon said Randy, who officially joined The Jacksons in 1975, elected not to join the tour but noted that the youngest Jackson brother was welcome at any time.)

"We have a certain magic," said Jackie. "Once we get out here and run it down a couple times, it comes back to you. I'm not (moving) like I used to, but we still got it."

Will the fans think so ? and will they turn out to see The Jacksons, whose ages now range from 55 to 61, perform their hits without Michael?

Last year, Cirque du Soleil launched "Michael Jackson: The Immortal World Tour" in Las Vegas. The show featuring dancers and acrobatic acts performing routines set to M.J. tunes has been among the top touring acts this year, and "Immortal" will return to Vegas for a residency at the Mandalay Bay Hotel and Casino.

However, Gary Bongiovanni, editor-in-chief of concert industry trade publication Pollstar, doesn't believe The Jacksons will achieve similar success with their smaller endeavor.

"The Jacksons were really all about Michael," said Bongiovanni. "The Cirque du Soleil show was successful because it was Cirque du Soleil and Michael's music. I don't know if that portends much for the remaining brothers and their ability to generate enthusiasm for ticket sales."

The brothers are undaunted, hoping to release an album of new music then go back out on tour.

"It's like riding a bike," said Marlon. "You never forget, but you do need to tweak a few things."

Couponing - Family Woodworking

My son drew my attention to a tv show related to couponing.

I was just wondering if anyone here makes use of coupons like the reality show demonstrates or is this show just fake.?

I aint seen coupons in Canada where one ends up getting the product free. Is this widespread in the USA on groceries. I found the show fascinating to see how some people have taken to doing this in such a disciplined manner.

Can you guys shed some light on the truth here for this immigrant.

Things that dont make sense to me is any coupon deal i have ever seen limits use and frequency yet in this coupon show the people are buying (using coupons) crazy numbers of a product.

Someone please help me out here it seems like a new sub culture of its own. One person on the show holds "couponing parties" with games and prizes and tips on how to do it.

Each time i think i have seen it all something else comes up

I guess this is another one where Larry the cable guy would say.......only in America.

Ok spill the beans you guys.

Burritobot is a precision tortilla-filling machine

15 hrs.

Marko Manriquez, a grad student at NYU, has chosen a topic for his Masters thesis that many wish they could have investigated more thoroughly in school: Burritos. Burrito assembly, to be specific. He's adapted an iPhone-controlled 3-D printing platform to dispense ingredients into tortillas, and he calls it Burritobot.

It's not quite ready to deploy worldwide and put thousands of young Taco Bell workers out of their jobs, but the concept is more or less functional and may in fact represent the future of on-location food delivery. Just last week we saw that Italy's Let's Pizza?automatic pizza-making machine was coming to the U.S., so can it really be long before other popular food items get the robot treatment?

Manriquez's machine is based loosely on a type of 3-D printer that fires out a fast-setting material in tiny threads, slowly building up a?desired shape. But if the nozzles were to fire guacamole and sour cream instead of plastic, and the base were a burrito instead of a metal plate, that would more or less describe the Burritobot.

The volume?of various ingredients can be controlled via an iPhone or web app, so you don't have to rely on a chef's intuition as to how much salsa is just right for you. Unfortunately, at the moment the nozzles are so small that very little texture can make it through, making the consistency a little pasty ? and then there's the whole problem of cooking items to order, folding and packaging the burrito, and so on.

But it's not meant to be a final product, just an idea translated to reality. As Manriquez tells FastCo Design:

More to the point is to deliver a conceptual burrito creating a dialogue about food issues. In terms of taste, more development and testing is required. Nothing replaces the human touch (apologies to my robot friends) of simple, unprocessed food, a few spices, and time.

Fans of Mexican food will agree, though automation has produced good results in other areas where hand-crafting used to be the norm. It's largely an engineering problem, which means it's just a matter of time before your burrito, quesadilla, wrap, or panini is handed to you by a robot's pincer or delivered in a chute rather than by the hand of a fellow human.

Me or the Dog

A: Your boyfriend sounds as if he's being overly dogmatic. If I were you, I'd like some more confirmation that your boyfriend is actually allergic to dogs. If he was attacked as a child and has avoided them for the rest of his life, I'm wondering if he truly knows he has allergies, or that is just a more convincing way of keeping dogs at bay than saying he was traumatized as a kid and has never gotten over it. However, your plan to wait until your beloved pooch dies before you move on with your reproductive plans is ill-conceived. You'd be astounded, with medical advances and the potential of large veterinary bills, how much life can be eked out of an ailing, aging dog?and 9 is not that old. As your dog is declining, so is your fertility. You might easily be able to have children in your later 30s, but if you know you want them now and you've found the partner you want them with, it's not a good idea to wait.

Sharp teams up with design company for new Feel UX Android skin

While the western hemisphere hasn't (perhaps fortunately) got to experience Sharp's existing Android UI, it's announced that it'll be teaming up with design firm, frog, to craft Feel UX, a new "highly personalized", "visually stunning" smartphone experience. It will land on Sharp's next wave of AQUOS smartphones this summer, and will presumably tie-in to Japan-centric features like 1seg TV and IR receivers. We're told that highlights will include photo browsing and widget functionality without unlocking devices and "real-time weather display motion experience and animation." If you're getting a strong 'Sense' of déjà vu, you're not alone, but we're still intrigued by frog's efforts to "streamline" the home screen and tinker with app management -- some of those lockscreen shortcuts are looking mighty convenient. Sharp's Global Product Development Center's Itsuki Kouchi reckons it'll help them create "distinctive" devices, so take a look at the UI in action after the break and make that call for yourself. However, given a choice, we may still plump for Sharp's fan-baiting Evangelion skin.

Dating evidence: Relics could be of John the Baptist

ScienceDaily (June 18, 2012) ? New dating evidence supports claims that bones found under a church floor in Bulgaria may be of John the Baptist, who is described in the Bible as a leading prophet and relative of Jesus Christ. A team from the Oxford Radiocarbon Accelerator Unit at Oxford University dated a knucklebone from the right hand to the 1st century AD, a date which fits with the widely held view of when he would have lived. The researchers say they were surprised when they discovered the very early age of the remains adding, however, that dating evidence alone cannot prove the bones to be of John the Baptist.

The bones were originally discovered in 2010 by archaeologist Kazimir Popkonstantinov, excavating under an ancient church on an island in Bulgaria known as Sveti Ivan, which translates into English as St John. The knucklebone was one of six human bones, including a tooth and the face part of a cranium, found in small marble sarcophagus under the floor near the altar. Three animal bones were also inside the sarcophagus. Oxford professors Thomas Higham and Christopher Ramsey attempted to radiocarbon date four human bones, but only one of them contained a sufficient amount of collagen to be dated successfully.

Professor Higham said: 'We were surprised when the radiocarbon dating produced this very early age. We had suspected that the bones may have been more recent than this, perhaps from the third or fourth centuries. However, the result from the metacarpal hand bone is clearly consistent with someone who lived in the early first century AD. Whether that person is John the Baptist is a question that we cannot yet definitely answer and probably never will.'

Former Oxford student Dr Hannes Schroeder and Professor Eske Willerslev, both from the University of Copenhagen, also reconstructed the complete mitochondrial DNA genome sequence from three of the human bones to establish that the bones were all from the same individual. Significantly, they identified a family group of genes (mtDNA haplotype) as being a group most commonly found in the Near East, which is better known as the Middle East today -- the region where John the Baptist would have originated from. They also established that the bones were probably of a male individual after an analysis of the nuclear DNA from samples.

Dr Schroeder said: 'Our worry was that the remains might have been contaminated with modern DNA. However, the DNA we found in the samples showed damage patterns that are characteristic of ancient DNA, which gave us confidence in the results. Further, it seems somewhat unlikely that all three samples would yield the same sequence considering that they had probably been handled by different people. Both of these facts suggest that the DNA we sequenced was actually authentic. Of course, this does not prove that these were the remains of John the Baptist but nor does it refute that theory as the sequences we got fit with a Near Eastern origin.'

The Bulgarian archaeologists, who excavated the bones, also found a small tuff box (made of hardened volcanic ash) close to the sarcophagus. The tuff box bears inscriptions in ancient Greek that directly mention John the Baptist and his feast day, and text asking God to 'help your servant Thomas'. One theory is that the person referred to as Thomas had been given the task of bringing the relics to the island. An analysis of the box has shown that the tuff box has a high waterproof quality and is likely to have originated from Cappadocia, a region of modern-day Turkey. The Bulgarian researchers believe that the bones probably came to Bulgaria via Antioch, an ancient Turkish city, where the right hand of St John was kept until the tenth century.

In a separate study, another Oxford researcher Dr Georges Kazan has used historical documents to show that in the latter part of the fourth century, monks had taken relics of John the Baptist out of Jerusalem and these included portions of skull. These relics were soon summoned to Constantinople by the Roman Emperor who built a church to house them there. Further research by Dr Kazan suggests that the reliquary used to contain them may have resembled the sarcophagus-shaped casket discovered at Sveti Ivan. Archaeological and written records suggest that these reliquaries were first developed and used at Constantinople by the city's ruling elite at around the time that the relics of John the Baptist are said to have arrived there.

Dr Kazan said 'My research suggests that during the fifth or early sixth century, the monastery of Sveti Ivan may well have received a significant portion of St John the Baptist's relics, as well as a prestige reliquary in the shape of a sarcophagus, from a member of Constantinople's elite. This gift could have been to dedicate or rededicate the church and the monastery to St John, which the patron or patrons may have supported financially.'

The scientific analysis of the relics undertaken by Tom Higham and Christopher Ramsey at Oxford, and their colleagues in Copenhagen was supported by the National Geographic Society. The documentary 'Head of John the Baptist', featuring the scientists' work was shown on the National Geographic Channel on 17 June 2012.

Greek pro-bailout parties secure ruling majority

ATHENS (Reuters) - Parties backing a bailout saving Greece from bankruptcy won a slim parliamentary majority on Sunday, beating radical leftists who rejected austerity and bringing relief to the euro zone which was braced for fresh financial turmoil.

The election result looked likely to yield a coalition government led by conservative New Democracy but leaves an emboldened SYRIZA bloc to rally angry opposition in the streets to the punishing terms of the bailout.

Official results released by the interior ministry, with 97 percent of ballots counted, showed New Democracy taking 29.7 percent of the vote, with SYRIZA on 26.9. The PASOK Socialists were set to take 12.3 percent of the vote.

Because of a 50-seat bonus given to the party which comes first, that would give New Democracy and PASOK 162 seats in the 300-seat parliament, in an alliance broadly committed to the 130 billion euros ($164 billion) bailout.

Germany signaled there may be some leeway on the timeframe for cuts demanded in return for the aid.

The result buys time for the euro zone, which was braced for a SYRIZA victory and the prospect of having to cut debt-ridden Greece loose, potentially unleashing shocks that could break up the single currency.

But it exposed a deeply divided society, seething over the wage, job and pension cuts imposed as the price of two EU/IMF bailouts since 2010 totaling 240 billion euros.

The savage austerity has helped condemn Greece to five years of record recession and plummeting living standards.

Any new government could find its tenure short-lived. New Democracy and PASOK are unlikely to have won much more than 40 percent of the vote between them.

"The Greek people voted today to stay on the European course and remain in the euro zone," New Democracy leader Antonis Samaras, 61, told jubilant supporters. "There will be no more adventures, Greece's place in Europe will not be put in doubt."

FIGHT GOES ON

SYRIZA leader Alexis Tsipras, a former communist and student protest leader, conceded defeat, but vowed to spearhead opposition to Greece's austerity drive.

"From Monday, we will continue the fight," said Tsipras, who has gone from fringe obscurity to worldwide recognition in a matter of weeks. "A new day for Greece has already dawned," he said.

His supporters chanted, "Today was only the start. We will fight to topple these policies."

Two PASOK party officials said the Socialists would support a New Democracy-led government, either by actually ruling with them or by voting with the government in parliament. PASOK said it wanted an administration to include SYRIZA, but the radicals ruled this out.

The White House said it hoped the election outcome would lead to the swift formation of a new government that would make "timely progress" on economic challenges.

"We believe that it is in all our interests for Greece to remain in the euro area while respecting its commitment to reform," Jay Carney, President Barack Obama's press secretary, said.

Leaders of the Group of 20 world economic powers were convening in Mexico for a meeting on Monday.

Samaras told Reuters he was relieved by the vote. "I am relieved for Greece and Europe. As soon as possible we will form a government," he said.

A spokesman for Angela Merkel said on Twitter that the German chancellor had called Samaras to congratulate him "on good result, hope for quick, stable government".

Under a scorching sun, voters appeared torn between deep anger over the terms of the bailout and the traditional ruling parties who adopted it, and fear that a SYRIZA victory could bring a return to the drachma and even more economic calamity.

Many Greeks blame the traditional elite under New Democracy and PASOK for presiding over years of corruption and waste which have left them with a ruined economy and one of the heaviest debt burdens in the world.

The edges of Greek society are starting to fray under the country's severest test since the overthrow of the military dictatorship in 1974. The ultra-right Golden Dawn party looked set to win 18 seats.

The streets of central Athens are scarred by repeated waves of protests, some hospitals are short of vital medicines and reports of suicides caused by the crisis have become routine.

"I voted for the bailout because these are the terms that will keep us in Europe," said 66-year-old English teacher Koula Louizopoulou after casting her ballot in Athens, hinting that she had chosen New Democracy.

"It's the first time I feel depressed after voting, knowing that I voted again for those who created the problem, but we don't have another choice."

ROOM FOR RENEGOTIATION?

Euro zone finance ministers said the bailout terms remained the best way to drag Athens out of the crisis.

"The Eurogroup acknowledges the considerable efforts already made by the Greek citizens and is convinced that continued fiscal and structural reforms are Greece's best guarantee to overcome the current economic and social challenges and for a more prosperous future of Greece in the euro area," they said in a statement.

Euro zone paymaster Germany said the result represented a commitment to the bailout.

"The German Federal Government would consider such a result a decision by Greek voters to force ahead with the implementation of far-reaching economic and fiscal reforms," German Finance Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble said in a statement.

Samaras says he wants to renegotiate the bailout terms to promote growth and has called for an extra two years to make the cuts demanded of his country.

But Greece's euro zone peers are prepared only to change the margins of the deal. Its lenders say a new government must accept the conditions of the bailout or funds will be cut off, driving Athens into bankruptcy.

"There can't be substantial changes to the agreements but I can imagine that we would talk about the time axes once again, given that in reality there was political standstill in Greece because of the elections, which the normal citizens shouldn't have to suffer from," German Foreign Minister Guido Westerwelle said on German TV station ARD.

The euro hit a one-month high against the U.S. dollar, rising to around $1.2747 in early Australasian Monday trade, from around $1.2655 late in New York on Friday.

"What stands out is how close SYRIZA came ... so we expect some robust opposition to the austerity measures," said Daragh Maher, currency strategist at HSBC in London. "Markets will be concerned about how narrow the margin of victory was for ND and any gains in the euro and other markets will be limited." ($1 = 0.7921 euros)

One-hitters: Angels' Santana

By GREG BEACHAM

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 12:52 a.m. ET June 17, 2012

ANAHEIM, Calif. (AP) - Ervin Santana had his parents in the stands for the first time all season, and he took the mound with confidence after a pep talk from an old teammate.

No wonder Santana dramatically turned around a rocky season with a performance that put his name next to Nolan Ryan in the Los Angeles Angels' record book.

Santana took a perfect game into the seventh inning before finishing with a one-hitter, and Mark Trumbo hit a two-run homer in the Angels' 2-0 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks on Saturday night.

Santana (4-7) bounced back from several rough outings by retiring Arizona's first 20 hitters before Justin Upton's two-out single to center in the seventh.

The Dominican right-hander then retired the next five Diamondbacks before pinch-hitter Miguel Montero drew a four-pitch walk in the ninth. Santana finished up his first complete game of the season with two fly balls, getting a standing ovation and praise from his teammates.

"That was very good - very, very good," Santana said. "When you pass the sixth and nothing is happening, you have to think about it a little bit, but you just have to re-focus and keep pitching, and that's what I did."

And how: After Upton's hit, Santana completed his seventh career shutout and 14th complete game with just one more baserunner. With the 18th individual one-hitter in club history, Santana joined Ryan as the only pitchers to throw a no-hitter and a one-hitter for the Angels.

"It just felt like no matter what (fingers) I put down, they weren't going to hit it," said John Hester, the Angels' backup catcher. "It was hard not to think about (a perfect game), because you could tell he was throwing something special tonight."

Staked to a lead by Trumbo's 15th homer in the first, Santana had allowed nothing even close to a hit before Upton's clean single back up the middle. The Angel Stadium crowd of 42,483 responded with a standing ovation for a pitcher who bounced back from a lousy four-game stretch with a start that nearly equaled his no-hitter last July 27 in Cleveland.

Joe Saunders (4-5) allowed eight hits in six innings while facing the Angels for the first time since they traded him to Arizona in 2010. Saunders mostly kept pace with Santana, his longtime teammate and good friend, after a rough first inning, but the Diamondbacks were shut out for the third time in 11 games.

Saunders and Santana came up together through the Angels' farm system, both reaching the majors for the first time in 2005 and pitching in the same rotation for 4 1/2 years. They even made the AL All-Star team together in 2008.

"I talked to him (Friday) and said, `Keep your head up, keep doing your thing,"' Saunders said. "I guess I had some real good advice. He really had it going."

Howie Kendrick and Torii Hunter had three hits apiece for the Angels, who won for the sixth time in eight games despite stranding 10 runners and failing to score after the first inning. Their 17th victory in 23 games moves them back to a season-best four games over .500.

Just three days after San Francisco's Matt Cain threw the 22nd perfect game in major league history, Santana got within seven batters of the sixth no-hitter and third perfect game in a season that isn't even half over yet. The Angels already had their first no-hitter in 21 years when Jered Weaver blanked Minnesota on May 2.

After starting the season with abysmal run support, Santana returned to top form after a rough four-start stretch in which he allowed 27 hits and 23 runs in just 20 1-3 innings. The veteran has struggled with fastball control throughout the season, continuously falling behind hitters, but took control early against the Diamondbacks and never relented.

"He's as competitive as any pitcher in baseball, and you saw that," Angels manager Mike Scioscia said. "He pitched with purpose, and it all goes along to committing to a game plan. If he commits, that's what he can do."

Trumbo connected on a full-count curveball from Saunders, putting it into the bullpen behind the left-field wall. The sophomore slugger is having another outstanding season despite losing his rookie spot at first base to Albert Pujols, ranking among the AL leaders in batting average while producing stellar power numbers.

"(Santana) had everything working," Arizona manager Kirk Gibson said. "The early homer by Trumbo gave him confidence. Joe pitched a great game for us, battled his tail off, and really only made one mistake."

Pitching on his 31st birthday, Saunders settled down for a strong effort in his first start in Anaheim since the Angels traded their former first-round pick in 2010. Saunders started 115 games and earned 54 wins over parts of six seasons with the Angels before he left with three other players in a deal for right-hander Dan Haren, who also lost his first reunion start against Arizona on Friday night.

NOTES: Weaver will throw 30-40 pitches in a bullpen session Sunday as he moves closer to a return from the disabled list. ... Jerry Dipoto, the interim Arizona general manager who acquired Saunders, now runs the Angels. ... RHP Ian Kennedy takes the mound in Sunday's series finale against Angels youngster Garrett Richards.
